8 questions to ask any estate sale company

Whether or not a company publishes its fees, ask these on the first call.

  1. What is your commission, and is it on the gross or the net?40% of gross and 40% of net can be very different amounts.
  2. Do you have a minimum fee or minimum estate size? Some companies won't take estates under a set value.
  3. What other fees will I pay?Setup, advertising, dumpsters, cleanout and card-processing fees add up.
  4. Do you let anyone in before the sale?Early entry for dealers is one of the most common complaints families have.
  5. What happens to items that don't sell?Donated, hauled away, or left for you, and who pays for it.
  6. Do you offer a buyout or cleanout?Useful when a house needs to be empty fast.
  7. Are you bonded and insured?Ask for proof.
  8. How soon can you hold the sale, and when do I get paid? Some companies are booked 6–8 weeks out.
